FRESNO - My Heart's in the Highlands was produced in 1939 by the
Group Theatre. It grew out of one of Saroyan's short stories, published
in 1936, and evolved first into a one-act play and then into the
full length piece produced at the Guild Theatre in New York. In
that first cast was Sidney Lumet, the well-known film director,
who played the leading character of Johnny Alexander.
Saroyan's play is set in the Fresno of 1914. Its central character
is a young boy whose father is a passionate, impoverished poet.
We meet Johnny's family and his neighbors, and also a man named
Jasper MacGregor, who arrives mysteriously one day announcing that
his "heart is in the highlands."
In Good Company's production, directed by Denise Graziani, Johnny
is played by Christopher Colfer. The production also features Patrick
Allan Tromborg, Gordon Moore, George Spach, Tali Pomerantz and Jeannine
Hinman.
Tickets to the 2nd Space Theatre are $12.00 on Thursday and Sunday
($10.00 Student/Senior) and $14.00 on Friday and Saturday ($12.00
Student/Senior)
The Good Company Players carved their 150-seat arena theater space
out of two storefronts on Olive Avenue and opened the 2nd Space
in the summer of 1982. Over the years hundreds of comedies, dramas,
classics and original works (including the occasional small-scale
musical) have been presented at
the theater. Currently the 2nd Space Theatre has over 2300 Season
ticket holders.
